St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome
The burial of several powerful religious heads under the church gave a unique importance to this place. The church lost its original splendor during the 15th century due to constant demolitions. But after its depletion, it was subjected to 150 years of construction work with the involvement of renowned architects of the Renaissance and Baroque period.

The interior of the building is a museum that includes parts of incalculable value. With lofty ceilings and an enormous dome, and the dazzling white and pink marble, the interior catches visitor’s attention at first sight. The skillfully designed ceilings and the splendid designs on the lively marbles recite a stories. The depths of Christian religion is felt inside and outside the building.
Exhibited is a sculpture of Mary; the mother of God, with the dead body of her son. These types of sculptural works are mainly famous in Germany and France. The dome rests on four main pentagonal pillars, which are named after the saints whose have a common connection to the Cross. These are St. Veronica, St. Helena, St. Longinus and St. Andrew and their statues 4.5 meters in height are also represented there. This dome has breathtaking dimensions, is 43.20 m high and 42.34 m in diameter. The dome is decorated with 800 columns and 390 statues of marble and bronze. There is an opportunity to climb 320 steps to the top of the dome of St Peter and get a fascinating view. The elevators are also available there for those for which it is difficult to climb.
One of the most important events of the church is the Pope’s weekly address to the people. The pope addresses the people on St Peter’s Square, every Sunday at noon from his residence.
