Oprah Gail Winfrey was born on January 29, 1954 in a town in Mississippi. Her childhood was difficult. At birth, her mother abandoned her to move north and left her to be raised by her grandmother Hattie Mae Lee for 6 years. One of her most shocking anecdotes is that she claims she was so poor she had no clothes to wear and had to make her own clothes using the burlap potato sacks.
At age 9 she was raped and left home 13. A year later she gave birth to a child who did not survive infancy. The same year, her mother sent her to Tennessee, to live with the man who supposedly was her father. She got a job at local radio station, and by the age of 19 she was already working as a reporter for the local news.
But according to Kitty Kelley, author of an unauthorized biography called “Oprah,” the legend of Oprah is all lies. She claims the famous Winfrey played fast and loose with the truth to increase the audience of her television program.
In the same book, the author claims that Oprah had sex with several women and practiced prostitution as a teenager. The book also speaks of the bad relationship between her and her family. Oprah refuses to talk with her mother and refuses to get her DNA tested because she says she is not interested in meeting her father.
Thanks to her empathic reporting style, she developed quite a following. She moved to Chicago where her program became an overnight success. In a few months, she managed to have their own show, and with the money she earned she soon became head of her own production company.
